Chapter 8 - Emma Had Seen The Pattern Earlier Than Daniel

After the immediate legal crisis passed, Emma asked Daniel to sit with her in the guest room.
Noah was asleep nearby after being checked at the hospital.
Emma’s wrist was wrapped.
Bruises had already begun darkening along one shoulder from the stairs.
Daniel sat across from her.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Emma looked at him.
“For what part?”
The question hurt because there were too many possible answers.
Daniel swallowed.
“For making you prove she was dangerous instead of believing the pattern.”
Emma looked away.
“I knew something was wrong.”
“I know.”
“No. You knew I was uncomfortable.”
He nodded slowly.
“That’s different.”
She was right.
Emma had not known Vanessa would physically endanger Noah. No reasonable person could have predicted that exact act from the earlier behavior.
But Emma had accurately recognized obsession, intrusion, and manipulation.
Daniel repeatedly downgraded those things because accepting Emma’s interpretation required accepting something deeply disturbing about his cousin.
Family loyalty became a bias.
He believed blood relation made certain motives less plausible.
Emma had no such emotional insulation.
“She was your cousin,” Emma said. “So every time something felt wrong, you started from the assumption that I must be reading too much into it.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“I started thinking maybe I was.”
That hurt worse.
Vanessa had succeeded partly because Daniel’s resistance to the truth made Emma question her own instincts.
He reached for Emma’s hand, then stopped before touching it.
“What do you need from me?”
Emma thought for a long moment.
“Not protection speeches.”
He nodded.
“I need you to stop telling yourself that loving someone means giving them one more chance after the pattern is already clear.”
Daniel understood.
The gallery had exposed Vanessa.
It had also exposed the Bennett family habit of treating boundaries as negotiable whenever enforcing them made relatives uncomfortable.

That had to end too.
