Chapter 14 - The Camera Was Eventually Removed
A year after the attack, Daniel returned to the mountain estate alone.
Renovation work was underway before the property shifted to professional event and retreat management. The upper gallery had new safety glazing added inside the iron railing, increasing protection for children without ruining the architecture.
Daniel stood beneath the fireplace beam.
The small security camera remained where it had always been.
The same lens Emma pointed toward.
The same one that recorded Vanessa.
The estate manager asked whether Daniel wanted it upgraded.
Daniel looked at it for a long time.
Then said yes.
Not because he wanted the house to remember Vanessa.
Because cameras had a legitimate security purpose.
He refused to turn the device into a relic.
The original footage remained preserved with legal records.
He never watched it again after the court process ended.
Neither did Emma.
Noah had never seen it.
They intended to keep it that way.
Evidence existed to establish truth.
It did not need to become family entertainment or a trauma archive replayed every anniversary.
Before leaving, Daniel walked up the staircase where Emma had fallen.
Then stopped at the upper railing.
From there he could see the broad safety terrace below.
He imagined Noah disappearing over the edge.
His knees actually weakened.
For months Daniel had punished himself with one question:
What if the lower terrace had not been there?
Therapy eventually helped him understand that hypothetical horror could become another kind of prison.
The terrace was there.
Noah survived.
Emma survived.
Vanessa was stopped.
The next responsibility was not to live eternally inside the worst possible version of what almost happened.
It was to build better afterward.
Daniel left the gallery without touching the railing.
The house remained standing.
