Chapter 2 - The Small Black Lens Above The Fireplace

The thing Emma had pointed toward was almost invisible unless you knew where to look.
A small black security lens sat recessed into the dark timber beam above the two-story stone fireplace, angled across the upper gallery and balcony railing.
It was not there because Daniel distrusted Vanessa.
It had been installed three months earlier after several expensive antique pieces disappeared from the gallery during a contractor renovation.
The camera covered the upper hall.
The balcony.
The staircase entrance.
And most importantly, the exact section of railing where Vanessa had grabbed Noah.
Daniel had forgotten it was there.
Emma had not.
She remembered the installer showing her the tiny lens and joking that it was “the smallest guard in the house.”
Vanessa had apparently never noticed.
Daniel looked from the camera to his cousin.
Then back to Emma and Noah.
Something changed in his posture.
“Stay with him,” he told Emma.
Vanessa started down the gallery toward the staircase.
Daniel pointed upward.
“Don’t move.”
For once, she obeyed.
Not because Daniel shouted.
Because she understood that whatever story she was about to invent might already have been destroyed before she could tell it.
Daniel called estate security.
Then emergency medical services.
Noah was examined first.
The lower safety terrace had done exactly what the architect designed it to do. He had landed on a broad landscaped platform less than one story below the gallery rather than falling into the main foyer. He was shaken, had minor bruising, and would need observation, but there was no serious injury.
Emma’s stair fall was also evaluated.
A sprained wrist.
Several bruises.
Nothing that mattered compared with what could have happened.
Vanessa kept saying the same thing.
“It was an accident.”
No one answered her.
Then she changed it.
“Noah slipped.”
Still no answer.
Then:
“Emma is confused. She fell. She didn’t see what happened.”
That was when Daniel finally looked directly at her.
“She heard what you said.”
Vanessa’s lips tightened.
“What did I say?”
Daniel stared at her.
She had forgotten the most dangerous thing about lying after panic.
Sometimes you reveal what you need to deny before anyone tells you what was heard.
Daniel did not answer.

He simply waited for the estate security officer to retrieve the recording.
