Chapter 1 - The Fear On Adrian’s Face

The black SUV door was already open when Mara Bellini realized Adrian had no intention of letting her walk into the house with dignity.

She was thirty years old, almost nine months pregnant, wearing a beige maternity dress beneath a cream-colored coat. One hand stayed instinctively over the curve of her stomach as Adrian Cross seized her arm from one side and Sienna Vale grabbed her from the other.

The mansion behind them had once been Mara’s home too.

Stone steps.

Tall entrance doors.

Perfect hedges.

Decorative planters.

Everything cold and expensive beneath the crisp daylight.

Now Adrian was throwing his pregnant wife out of it.

“Let go of me!”

Neither listened.

Adrian dragged her away from the SUV.

Sienna pulled harder.

Mara stumbled toward the mansion steps, twisting carefully so she would not fall against her belly.

Then Sienna grabbed the baby bag from her shoulder.

The bag contained everything Mara had packed for the hospital.

Tiny diapers.

A knitted blanket.

Two newborn outfits.

A folder of medical paperwork.

A small silver brush Massimo had bought for his future grandchild.

Sienna looked directly at Mara—

and threw the bag into her face.

It struck Mara across the shoulder and cheek before dropping onto the driveway.

The zipper burst open.

Baby clothes scattered across the stone.

Mara stared down at them.

Then at her husband.

“ADRIAN—PLEASE!”

His face remained hard.

No regret.

No hesitation.

That was when Massimo Bellini appeared.

Mara’s sixty-one-year-old father came down the side path almost at a run, black coat open behind him, grey hair slicked back despite the wind.

“Mara.”

He reached her just as she bent toward the scattered baby things.

Massimo immediately steadied her.

“Don’t bend. I’ll get it.”

“I’m okay.”

“You’re not okay.”

Adrian approached.

He pointed directly at Mara.

“TAKE YOUR DRAMA AND GET OFF MY PROPERTY RIGHT NOW.”

Massimo slowly straightened.

The way he looked at Adrian changed the entire driveway.

Adrian stepped toward him.

“Stay out of my marriage.”

Massimo moved face-to-face with him.

“Your marriage?”

Adrian shoved him first.

Massimo shifted aside.

Then his right hand came around.

One punch.

A hard right hook struck Adrian across the face.

WHACK.

Adrian reeled backward into a decorative metal cart near the entrance.

The cart tipped over.

CRASH.

Packages spilled across the stone walkway.

No second punch.

Massimo turned immediately back toward Mara.

That was when Sienna rushed toward the scattered contents of the baby bag.

Not toward Mara.

Not to help.

Toward the paperwork.

Massimo saw it.

He knocked Sienna’s reaching hand aside.

Then, when she came forward again, he struck her once across the face with an open palm.

SLAP.

Sienna spun sideways into a tall decorative planter and dropped to the ground, stunned.

No second strike.

Mara remained standing.

One hand over her stomach.

The other trembling at her side.

She stared at Adrian.

He was still down beside the overturned cart.

Massimo stepped toward him.

Slowly.

Coldly.

Then said the sentence Mara would remember for the rest of her life.

“SHE’S YOUR WIFE... BUT THAT BABY MIGHT NOT BE YOURS.”

Mara froze.

She expected Adrian to shout.

To demand an explanation.

To accuse her.

Instead—

his face changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Raw, immediate fear.

Mara stared at him.

And suddenly the terror moved from Adrian’s face into her own.

Because innocent husbands ask questions.

Adrian didn’t.

He already understood exactly what Massimo meant.

And somehow—

May you like

that meant her father knew something about her pregnancy that Mara herself did not.
