Chapter 13 - Adrian Finally Admitted Why He Did It
The admission came during a deposition months later.
Not because Adrian suddenly developed a conscience.
Because the documentary evidence cornered him.
His attorney asked for a break.
Adrian refused.
Then he started talking.
He said the vasectomy had been a mistake from his first marriage.
He regretted it.
When he married Mara, he was afraid she would leave if she knew.
So he pretended they could conceive naturally.
When they couldn’t, he created increasingly elaborate lies.
At first, the donor deception was simply about becoming a father without admitting infertility.
Then money entered the picture.
He learned more about the Bellini trust.
Realized pregnancy made Mara emotionally vulnerable.
Realized a future paternity dispute could be useful if the marriage ever failed.
“What began as cowardice became strategy,” Mara’s attorney said.
Adrian stared at the table.
“Yes.”
“Did Mara consent to Julian Vale’s genetic material?”
“No.”
“Did you create or arrange the false electronic consent?”
“Yes.”
“Did you later intend to use the baby’s genetic paternity against your wife?”
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Mara was not in the room.
She read the transcript later.
That was enough.
The confession did not devastate her.
By then the devastation had already happened.
