Chapter 10 - Mara Had To Face The Violence On The Driveway Too
Massimo became a hero in family gossip within hours.
People loved the simple version.
Protective father arrives.
Punches cruel husband.
Slaps mistress.
Takes pregnant daughter home.
Mara hated that version.
Because real protection did not require pretending every violent response was admirable.
Adrian shoved Massimo first.
Massimo avoided it and punched him.
That could reasonably be viewed in the context of an active physical confrontation.
Sienna’s situation was different.
She reached toward Mara’s scattered baby belongings.
Massimo knocked her hand away.
Then slapped her.
The second action was retaliation.
Not necessary protection.
Massimo admitted that.
When Mara confronted him, he did not make excuses.
“I was angry.”
“That doesn’t make it okay.”
“No.”
“You could have gotten arrested.”
“Yes.”
“You could have made everything harder.”
“I know.”
Mara stared at him.
“I needed my father that day. Not somebody proving how dangerous he could be.”
Massimo absorbed that quietly.
Then nodded.
“You’re right.”

He apologized to Mara first.
Then, through attorneys, accepted responsibility for the slap.
That mattered to her.
Especially because she was about to raise a child in a family already poisoned by people confusing power with entitlement.
