Chapter 3 - Sienna Wanted The Fertility Folder

The baby bag mattered.
Mara realized that that night.
Not because it contained diapers.
Because Sienna had ignored everything else.
She had not reached for the designer blanket.
The silver brush.
The wallet tucked into the side pocket.
She went straight toward the papers.
Massimo noticed too.
He spread the recovered contents across his kitchen table.
Hospital registration.
Insurance card.
Prenatal summaries.
Ultrasound photographs.
Then one folder was missing.
Mara knew it instantly.
A pale-blue folder from the fertility clinic.
“I packed it this morning.”
“What was in it?”
“My treatment history. The obstetrician asked me to bring the old records because there was some confusion about the conception date.”
Massimo looked up.
“What confusion?”
Mara hesitated.
“The clinic listed the insemination one day later than I remember.”
“That’s it?”
“I thought so.”
Massimo sat back.
“Why was Sienna trying to grab the documents?”
“I don’t know.”
But they both did know one possibility.
Sienna feared something inside those records.
Mara called the fertility clinic the next morning.
The receptionist said old records could be released through the patient portal.
Mara logged in.
The first pages looked familiar.
Bloodwork.
Medication.
Ultrasound monitoring.
Procedure notes.
Then she reached the sperm-preparation report.
She stopped.
Partner specimen identification:
A. CROSS
That looked correct.
Collection verified:
8:42 a.m.
Preparation completed:
9:16 a.m.
But a handwritten addendum beneath the electronic report referenced:
replacement specimen authorized following inadequate original sample.
Mara read the line twice.
Then a third time.
There had been no replacement specimen in any conversation she remembered.
She called the clinic again.
This time she asked for the medical records supervisor.
The woman became cautious.
“Mrs. Cross, older assisted-reproduction records involving third-party material require review before discussion.”
Mara’s heart began pounding.
“Third-party?”
Silence.
Then:
“I shouldn’t have used that phrase before verification.”
Too late.
Mara already heard it.
Third-party material.
She ended the call.
Massimo was standing across the kitchen watching her.
“What?”
Mara lowered the phone.
May you like
“I don’t think Adrian’s sample was the one they used.”
