Chapter 15 - The Day Luca Asked Why His Last Name Was Bellini

Five years later, Luca sat at Mara’s kitchen table filling out a kindergarten project.
He had dark-brown hair now.
Big gray-blue eyes.
A stubborn habit of asking seventeen questions before breakfast.
Mara had divorced Adrian long ago.
She returned to using Bellini.
Luca was legally Luca Bellini too.
His school worksheet asked:
Who is in your family?
Luca drew Mara.
Massimo.
Himself.
Then the family dog, although Mara explained three times that Pepper did not technically need a last name.
Finally Luca looked up.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Why am I Bellini?”
“Because it’s our family name.”
“Was I ever Cross?”
Mara paused.
They had always planned age-appropriate honesty.
Never one catastrophic revelation at eighteen.
Truth in pieces.
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Not very long.”
“Why?”
Mara pulled out the chair beside him.
“Your family story is a little complicated.”
Luca brightened.
“Like superheroes?”
“Much less interesting outfits.”
He laughed.
Then she told him the simplest version.
Before he was born, Adrian had made serious dishonest choices about how Mara became pregnant.
Those choices meant there were adults connected to Luca biologically whom he did not know yet.
“But you’re my mom.”
“Yes.”
“And Grandpa’s Grandpa.”
“Unfortunately permanent.”
From the doorway Massimo said:
“I heard that.”
Luca giggled.
Then asked:
“Was Adrian my dad?”
Mara chose her words carefully.
“He was supposed to be your father. He made choices that meant he could not safely be part of our family.”
Luca considered that.
“Did he make me?”
There it was.
The biological question.
Mara touched his hand.
“Not genetically.”
“What’s genetically?”
“A conversation requiring snacks.”
He nodded seriously.
“Okay.”
She brought cookies.
Over the next twenty minutes, she explained donors in language a five-year-old could understand.
Not every deception.
Not Sienna.
Not the fake consent.
That would come later.
Luca listened.
Then returned to his worksheet.
He drew another figure.
Mara watched.
“Who’s that?”
Luca shrugged.
“Don’t know yet.”
She felt something tighten in her chest.
He meant his biological father.
Julian.
The man whose genetic material had been used without Mara’s knowledge, but who had not knowingly deceived her.
Someday Luca might want to meet him.
Mara would help him decide.
That future no longer frightened her.
Because Adrian’s greatest violation had not been that Luca carried another man’s DNA.
It was that Adrian believed biology could be manipulated into shame.
Mara refused to give him that victory.
That evening Massimo found her putting Luca’s kindergarten drawing on the refrigerator.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You sure?”
Mara smiled.
“Dad, you don’t have to threaten anyone.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“You were thinking about it.”
“Maybe one person.”
She laughed.
Then looked at the drawing.
Five years earlier she had stood in a mansion driveway with baby clothes scattered at her feet, one hand over her unborn child while her father told her:
That baby might not be yours.
She remembered Adrian’s face.
Not confusion.
Fear.
At the time, it felt like the sentence had destroyed her family.
Now she understood it had only destroyed a lie.
Luca had never been the lie.
He was the one completely innocent person inside all of it.
He did not belong to Adrian because Adrian planned it.
He did not belong to Julian because of DNA.
He did not belong to Sienna because she shared blood with the donor.
Luca belonged to himself.
Mara’s job was simply to raise him with enough truth that nobody could someday weaponize his own story against him.
She placed his drawing at eye level on the refrigerator.
Massimo stood beside her.
On the page, Luca had written his name in huge uneven letters:
LUCA BELLINI
No fear.
No scandal.
No question mark.
Just a little boy learning how to spell the family name he knew as home.

And after everything Adrian had tried to turn his birth into—
that felt like the cleanest ending Mara could have asked for.
