Chapter 12 - The Baby Was Born Before The Case Was Finished

Mara went into labor eighteen days after the driveway confrontation.
At 3:12 in the morning.
At Massimo’s house.
Her first thought was irrational.
Not yet.
She wanted the legal questions settled first.
Babies do not care about litigation schedules.
By sunrise she was in the hospital.
Massimo sat outside.
Mara’s mother had died years earlier, so her closest friend stayed beside her through labor.
Adrian requested access.
Mara refused.
Her attorney arranged communication through hospital security.
No confrontation.
No dramatic hallway fight.
Just a boundary.
At 4:48 that afternoon, Mara delivered a healthy baby boy.
Seven pounds, two ounces.
Dark little wisps of hair.
Furious lungs.
Perfect fingers.
Mara cried when they placed him against her chest.
Not because she wondered whose nose he had.
Because for the first time since discovering the truth, biology became irrelevant.
He was here.
Her son.
She named him Luca.
Massimo entered later.
He stood beside the bed staring at his grandson.
For all his commanding presence, the old man suddenly looked terrified to touch something so small.
Mara smiled.
“Pick him up.”
“I’ll break him.”
“You punched a thirty-five-year-old man into a cart.”
“That was easier.”
She laughed for the first time in weeks.
Massimo finally held Luca.
His eyes filled.
Mara watched them and thought:
Adrian had tried to turn this baby into evidence.
Massimo was holding him like a person.

That difference was everything.
