Chapter 10 - I Had Been Protecting the Marriage More Than I Was Protecting Sophia

My accountability came through:
Sophia’s own questions.
First:
“Why does Grandma call Miles her real grandson?”
I answered:
“She loves all of you.”
That was not the question.
Clue one.
Second:
“Does Dad wish I was his real kid?”
I became horrified.
“Of course not.”
Then I confronted:
nobody.
Because I wanted Sophia reassured without destabilizing:
the marriage.
Clue two.
Third:
school family-tree project.
Sophia left Jason’s side:
blank.
I asked:
“Why?”
She said:
“Grandma says blood goes on family trees.”
I explained adoption.
Helped her fill:
the page.
Then still brought her to Sunday dinner with:
Diane.
Clue three.
Fourth came one month before brunch.
Sophia asked:
“If you and Dad divorce, am I still his daughter?”
I froze.
“Why would you ask that?”
She shrugged.
“Grandma says people can leave.”
I called Jason.
He said:
“Mom probably means Mark.”
I accepted:
maybe.
Why?
Because I was already afraid our marriage was failing.
Jason had become:
distant.
Critical.
More aligned with:
Diane.
I believed keeping the family together would protect:
Sophia
from another father disappearing.
So every time Diane undermined Sophia’s place, I told myself:
Don’t create another rupture.
That was my blind spot.
I was so afraid of Sophia losing:
a family
that I tolerated people telling her she never fully belonged to:
one.
May you like
That was mine.
