Chapter 14 - Diane’s Apology Failed Twice Before It Became Real

First:
I’m sorry Sophia misunderstood.
No.
Second:
I’m sorry Rachel made estate planning into something personal.
Absolutely not.
Then almost a year passed.
Diane lost:
access.
Not because I controlled:
her granddaughter.
Because Sophia did not want:
visits
and the family therapist recommended:
space.
The lake house became:
quiet.
Evan’s children still visited.
Jason occasionally went.
But the reunion tables no longer included:
us.
Then Diane wrote:
Sophia, I treated biology like a ranking system.
Better.
I told myself I was protecting family property.
Instead I made you believe you were less family.
There.
Then:
The house was mine to plan for. Your place in our family was never mine to revoke.
That sentence mattered.
Sophia was eight by then.
She read the letter with:
me.
Then asked:
“Am I getting the house?”
I laughed despite myself.
“No.”
“Then what changed?”
Excellent question.
“Grandma is saying the house and you are separate things.”
“She can decide what happens to the house.”
“She does not decide whether you’re Dad’s daughter.”
Sophia nodded.
Then:
“Okay.”
Children often need:
less drama
May you like
than adults.
