I want this clear.
Discovering the draft deed did not mean:
Sophia suddenly owned the lake house.
She did not.
Diane was entitled to make estate-planning choices with:
her own property
subject to whatever legal structures and fiduciary duties applied.
She could leave it to:
Jason,
Evan,
charity,
a trust,
sell it.
What she could not do without consequence inside our family was:
pretend exclusion carried no message.
Jason kept saying:
“Mom can do what she wants.”
Legally broad.
Emotionally evasive.
I answered:
“Yes.”
“And I can decide whether Sophia and I continue participating in a family that treats her like temporary furniture.”
That was the boundary.
Not:
give her property.
Respect:
her personhood.
The deed was evidence of a belief.
The brunch made that belief:
