Chapter 3 - Diane Loved Sophia Until Her First Biological Grandchild Was Born
For the first two years, Diane seemed to accept:
Sophia.
She bought birthday gifts.
Came to:
school performances.
Kept a photo on:
the refrigerator.
Then Jason’s younger brother Evan married.
A year later his wife gave birth to:
Miles.
Diane’s first biological grandson.
Everything shifted.
Not immediately.
Tiny things.
At Christmas, Miles received:
the engraved silver ornament.
Sophia got:
a sweater.
Fine.
Babies receive special things.
Then the family portrait.
Diane said:
“Let’s get one of the Millers.”
Sophia stepped toward:
us.
Diane said:
“Maybe one with just the blood family first.”
I stared.
Jason laughed awkwardly.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“She’s seven months old?”
No, let's keep timeline right. Sophia maybe six then.
Diane corrected herself.
“I mean original family.”
Worse.
Jason pulled Sophia into:
the photo.
Issue apparently resolved.
