Chapter 5 - Jason Started Using the Phrase “Technically My Daughter”

The first time I heard it, I thought:
I misunderstood.
We were at dinner with another couple.
The wife asked whether Jason and I wanted:
more children.
I said:
“Maybe.”
Jason laughed.
“I’ve already got one technically.”
Technically.
I looked at him.
He saw:
my face.
Immediately corrected:
“You know what I mean.”
I did not.
Later in the car:
“What did you mean?”
“That I didn’t do the baby stage.”
“So?”
“I adopted her at five.”
“That makes her technically your child?”
“No.”
“Then why say technically?”
Jason became irritated.
“Rachel, stop.”
That became his answer whenever I noticed:
something
he did not want examined.
