Chapter 5 - Callum Never Needed to Hit Her Every Day
The evidence did not show constant physical violence.
It showed control.
That was worse in a different way because it explained why Rosalie felt trapped even on days when Callum never touched her.
He checked her phone.
Demanded passwords.
Insisted they share location data.
Criticized her friends until she gradually stopped seeing them.
If she spent money he considered unnecessary, he made her explain it.
If she argued, he took the car keys because she was “too emotional to drive.”
Then came the apologies.
Flowers.
Dinner.
Weekend trips.
Promises.
“I hate who I become when I’m scared of losing you.”
Rosalie told me those words because she had believed them.
For a while.
The last incident before Christmas happened after she told Callum she wanted space.
He punched a hole through their bedroom door.
He did not hit her.
Then he stood beside the hole and said:
“Look what you make me become.”
Rosalie photographed the door.
That night she began planning to leave temporarily.
Callum found out sometime before Christmas dinner.
And suddenly my house became part of his problem.
If Rosalie stayed with me alone, he could no longer control every conversation.
