Chapter 7 - Rosalie Grabbed My Phone Because She Was Still Protecting Him

For two days after Christmas, I was angry with my daughter.

Not because she loved Callum.

Because when he smashed the camera, she grabbed my phone.

I thought she was trying to delete the footage.

That hurt.

Then she explained.

“I wasn’t protecting him.”

“You said, ‘Don’t make things worse.’”

“I was talking to you.”

“Why?”

She stared at the floor.

“Because I knew what would happen if the police came.”

“What?”

“He’d lose everything.”

I almost laughed from disbelief.

“He punched your mother in the face.”

“I know.”

“He broke the camera.”

“I know.”

“He’s hurt you.”

“I know!”

Her voice cracked.

Then she said the sentence that finally made me understand.

“But if everything collapses because I told you, then it’s real.”

That was the trap.

As long as Rosalie stayed quiet, she could pretend her marriage was damaged but repairable.

Once police, lawyers, and family knew—

the private version of Callum disappeared.

She would have to confront the public facts.

Rosalie wasn’t trying to save Callum from me.

She was trying to delay the moment she had to admit she could no longer save the marriage.
