Chapter 6 - The Security Camera Had Been Installed Because Rosalie Was Afraid to Be Disbelieved
Two days before Christmas, Rosalie asked:
“What if he comes to your house?”
“He leaves.”
“What if he says I’m lying?”
“That doesn’t change anything.”
“You don’t understand.”
She looked terrified.
“He’s really good when other people are watching.”
That sentence stayed with me.
My dining room already had a security system.
But the old camera stored footage locally.
I upgraded it.
One visible camera.
Same location.
But now every second uploaded automatically to encrypted cloud storage connected to my account.
Breaking the device would stop future recording.
It would not erase what had already been transmitted.
I did not install it to provoke Callum.
I hoped he would never give it anything important to record.
Then Christmas came.
He punched me in front of the entire family.
I defended myself.
And when he realized the camera had seen it, he destroyed the device.
That act told me something about Callum’s instincts.
A frightened innocent person might shout:
“You attacked me too!”
Callum’s first thought was:
Destroy the evidence.
That was why I smiled.
He thought he had solved a problem.
