Chapter 1 - The Voice Behind The Wall

Warm kitchen light filled the Carter family’s suburban home, bright against the narrow darkness behind the old metal wall vent near the floor.

Ryan Carter walked into the kitchen expecting an ordinary afternoon.

Instead, he stopped cold.

His seven-year-old son, Ethan, was kneeling beside the vent with pieces of bread cupped in one hand. With the other, he was carefully pushing them through the narrow metal slats.

“Ethan… what are you doing?”

The boy jerked around.

Fear crossed his face immediately.

Not the guilty look of a child stealing cookies.

Real fear.

He pointed toward the wall with trembling fingers.

“She said never to tell you… but the little girl is hungry.”

Ryan stared at him.

“What little girl?”

Before Ethan could answer, Claire rushed into the kitchen.

The second she saw Ryan moving toward the vent, panic overwhelmed her expression.

She ran directly in front of him and spread both arms.

“Ryan, don’t open it!”

Everyone went still.

Ryan looked at his wife.

Claire’s breathing had become frantic.

Then something came from behind the wall.

A child crying.

Faint.

Exhausted.

Real.

Ryan slowly turned his head toward the vent again.

Claire whispered his name, but he barely heard her.

Then a tiny hand appeared between the metal slats.

Ethan backed away.

Ryan dropped immediately to his knees.

The little fingers trembled against the metal.

Then came a weak girl’s voice.

“Daddy… help me.”

Ryan went pale.

He turned slowly toward Claire.

She stepped backward.

Couldn’t meet his eyes.

“Why did she call me Daddy?”

Claire’s lips parted.

No answer came.

And in that instant Ryan understood something far worse than discovering a strange child in his house.

His wife knew exactly who she was.
