Chapter 7 - Nora’s Illness Forced The Secret Back Into The Open
The secret might have lasted longer if Nora had remained healthy.
She didn’t.
The previous autumn, Nora was diagnosed with an aggressive lymphoma.
Treatment started immediately.
For several months her prognosis looked hopeful.
Then it didn’t.
Nora was thirty-six.
Lily was five.
Beth, Nora’s older sister, became the practical adult carrying everything—hospital schedules, school pickup, insurance forms, and eventually conversations about what would happen if Nora died.
That was when Beth learned the full story about Ryan.
She had always known Ryan existed.
She had never known exactly what the emails said.
Nora showed her.
Beth read the rejection message supposedly written by Ryan and said something immediately:
“That doesn’t sound like the man you described.”
Nora shrugged.
“People sound different when they’re choosing a family.”
Still, Beth became suspicious.
She found Ryan online.
Saw photographs of him with Ethan.
Read an interview where he spoke openly about growing up without his own father and said he believed children deserved direct truth from adults.
The statement bothered her.
A man capable of writing such a cold pregnancy rejection could still say those things publicly, of course.
But Beth wanted certainty.
She contacted Ryan’s business office.
Claire intercepted the message before Ryan saw it.
That was when Claire realized the secret was no longer buried safely in old email accounts.
Nora was dying.
Beth intended to find Ryan.
