Chapter 6 - Nora Raised Lily Without Chasing Ryan
Nora did not spend the next five years trying to destroy Ryan’s life.
That fact made what Claire did harder to defend.
After receiving the fake rejection, Nora decided she would not beg a man who had apparently told her his family did not include her child.
She moved to Rhode Island to be closer to her older sister, Beth.
Lily was born healthy.
Nora gave her the surname Blake.
She did not list Ryan publicly as an active father because there had been no established paternity and no relationship.
But she did not lie to Lily either.
As the girl grew old enough to ask why she did not have a dad living with them, Nora explained in simple language:
“Your dad lives somewhere else. Things happened before you were born. It wasn’t because of you.”
She kept the photograph.
She also kept copies of the emails.
That mattered.
Two years later Nora wrote Ryan another letter.
Not asking him to return.
She wanted Lily’s medical history clarified because the child had developed a heart rhythm irregularity that doctors believed was probably benign but wanted to evaluate against paternal history.
The letter never reached Ryan.
Why?
Because Claire had updated the family’s postal-forwarding and household correspondence system during a move.
When Nora’s envelope arrived addressed to Ryan personally, Claire recognized the return name.
She opened it.
Then destroyed it.
That was the second deliberate act.
The first could still be blamed, weakly, on panic.
The second could not.
By then Claire had years to understand what she was doing.
She chose silence again.
