Chapter 9 - Why Claire Was More Afraid Of Ryan Knowing The Past Than Meeting Lily
Later, Claire admitted something that made even her own attorney uncomfortable.
She was not primarily afraid Ryan would immediately leave her for Nora.
Nora was gravely ill.
The old romantic relationship was long over.
Claire was afraid of something deeper.
If Ryan learned Lily existed, he would ask the obvious question:
Why didn’t Nora tell me?
And once Ryan asked that, the old email trail would eventually surface.
Claire knew Beth had copies.
That meant Ryan would discover that six years of fatherhood had not been lost because Nora chose silence.
They had been taken by Claire’s intervention.
The lie threatened the entire meaning of their reconciliation.
For years Claire privately told herself Ryan chose her and Ethan over Nora.
But that choice had been made without the truth.
If Ryan had known Nora was pregnant, maybe he still would have reconciled with Claire.
Maybe he would have co-parented Lily.
Maybe everything would have been difficult but survivable.
Claire would never know.
And that uncertainty terrified her.
Because it meant the marriage she protected so aggressively had been built partly on a decision Ryan was never actually allowed to make.
Lily’s appearance did not simply introduce another child.
It exposed the original theft of choice.
That was why Claire panicked enough to hide a five-year-old girl in an old service corridor.
Not because the child herself was dangerous.
