Chapter 5 - Claire Read The Pregnancy Email First

The email arrived on an old laptop Ryan and Claire still shared.
They had only recently moved back under the same roof.
Claire was struggling badly with trust. She knew Ryan had been with Nora during the separation, and intellectually she accepted that neither of them had violated the agreement.
Emotionally, Nora still felt like proof that Ryan had built a life without her faster than she had imagined possible.
One night Claire opened the laptop to print a daycare form.
A notification appeared.
From: Nora Blake.
Subject: I Need To Tell You Something.
Claire opened it.
Nora wrote that she had just learned she was pregnant.
She believed Ryan was almost certainly the father.
She did not want money that night.
She did not want him to leave Claire immediately.
She only wanted to speak directly before deciding what came next.
Claire sat staring at the screen for nearly an hour.
Then Ryan came downstairs.
She closed the laptop.
Said nothing.
The next morning, while Ryan was at work, Claire opened the email again.
She deleted it.
Then she wrote a reply from Ryan’s account.
It was short.
Cold.
And completely false.
I made my choice. Claire and Ethan are my family. Do not contact me again about this.
Nora replied only once.
I understand.
Claire deleted that too.
Then blocked Nora’s address.
For years, Claire told herself she had saved her marriage during a fragile moment.
That Ryan would have left.
That Ethan would have lost his home.
That Nora had known Ryan was reconciling with his wife anyway.
Every justification avoided the central truth.
Ryan had a right to know he might have another child.
Nora had a right to tell him.
And the unborn child had a right not to have one adult erase the connection before she was even born.
Claire took that choice from all three of them.
For almost six years, nobody knew.
May you like
Except Claire.
