Chapter 10 - Ryan Did Not Accept Lily As His Daughter On One Sentence Alone

Ryan wanted to believe the girl immediately.
Part of him already did.
There were small things.
Her eyes.
The shape of her chin.
The way she frowned when concentrating.
But resemblance is not paternity.
So Ryan did what responsible adults do when the truth matters.
He called an attorney.
Then a pediatrician.
Then Beth, after finding her number in Lily’s backpack.
Beth arrived at the house furious, terrified, and ready to call police.
When she found Lily physically safe with Ryan and Ethan, some of the panic subsided.
Not the anger.
She slapped Claire with words instead.
“You locked a grieving child in a service passage because you were scared your husband would find out you lied?”
Claire cried.
Beth did not care.
Ryan stopped the conversation before it became chaos.
Lily had already endured enough adult emotion.
Police were called because Claire’s temporary confinement of the child needed to be documented, not managed privately.
A pediatric examination confirmed Lily was tired and mildly dehydrated from a stressful day but otherwise physically okay. Her weakness had come from poor sleep, grief, and having eaten almost nothing since breakfast—not prolonged starvation.
Then came the paternity test.
Not instant.
Not from a miraculous home kit.
A legally documented DNA test through an accredited laboratory.
Ryan provided a sample.
Lily did too, with Beth’s consent as her temporary guardian while Nora remained hospitalized.
The result returned three days later.
Probability of paternity: greater than 99.99 percent.
Ryan read it twice.
Then sat down.
Ethan asked:
“So she really is my sister?”
Ryan looked at his son.
“Yes.”
Ethan thought for a moment.
Then asked the most seven-year-old question possible.
“Does she get my room?”
Ryan laughed despite everything.
“No.”

That tiny ordinary moment probably saved him from falling apart completely.
