Chapter 2 - Ethan Had Heard Her Crying Before Ryan Came Home
The space behind the vent was not literally a sealed cavity inside the wall.
The house had been renovated decades earlier, and behind the kitchen ran a narrow service chase that once connected a pantry, laundry passage, and old dumbwaiter system. Most of it had been closed off during remodeling, but one maintenance door remained accessible from a short corridor beside the mudroom.
Claire had locked that door.
Ryan did not know that yet.
Ethan did.
Not because Claire told him.
Because an hour earlier he had been sitting on the kitchen floor building a plastic train track when he heard something behind the vent.
At first he thought it was an animal.
Then he heard crying.
He pressed his ear near the metal.
“Hello?”
The crying stopped.
A little voice answered.
“Are you Ethan?”
That terrified him.
“How do you know my name?”
The girl whispered, “She told me you were my brother.”
Ethan did not understand.
He knew he had no sister.
At least he thought he didn’t.
He ran upstairs to find Claire and told her there was a girl inside the wall.
Claire’s face changed immediately.
She crouched in front of him and gripped both his shoulders.
“Listen to me. She’s not supposed to be here.”
“Why is she in the wall?”
“She isn’t in the wall. It’s an old room.”
“Can I let her out?”
“No.”
Ethan started crying.
Claire lowered her voice.
“Your dad cannot know yet.”
“Why?”
“Because grown-up things are happening.”
Then came the sentence that made Ethan obey for almost twenty minutes.
“If you tell him before I fix this, you could destroy our family.”
Ethan was seven.
He had no idea what “destroy our family” meant.
He only knew it sounded like something terrible he might accidentally cause.
So he stayed quiet.
Until the girl whispered again that she was hungry.
Ethan went to the pantry.
He took soft pieces from a dinner roll because he thought they would fit through the vent.
Then Ryan came home early.
