Chapter 11 - Nora Was Still Alive Long Enough To Tell Ryan The Truth Herself

Ryan went to see Nora in the hospital.
Claire did not come.
Beth arranged the meeting only after Nora agreed.
Ryan had imagined that moment repeatedly over the three days waiting for DNA results. In some versions he was angry. In others apologetic. Sometimes Nora screamed at him. Sometimes she refused to see him.
Reality was quieter.
Nora looked smaller than he remembered.
Sicker.
But unmistakably herself.
Ryan sat beside the bed.
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then he said:
“I didn’t write that email.”
Nora closed her eyes.
Beth had already told her.
“I know now.”
“I never knew.”
“I know.”
Ryan’s voice broke.
“I would have come.”
That was the sentence that finally made Nora cry.
Not because she wanted him romantically.
That part of their lives had ended six years earlier.
Because for years she had raised Lily while believing Ryan consciously rejected her.
The difference between abandonment and ignorance did not restore the lost time.
But it changed what the lost time meant.
Nora gave Ryan the old email printouts.
Claire’s fake response.
The later letter.
Every attempt she made.
Ryan asked why Nora eventually stopped trying.
She answered simply:
“Because I wasn’t going to teach my daughter to beg a man to want her.”
He understood.
Before leaving, Ryan asked what Nora wanted now.
Not legally.
Personally.
She looked toward the photograph of Lily beside her hospital bed.
“I want her to know none of this was because she wasn’t worth finding.”
Ryan promised that.

It was the first promise in the entire story he had the right to make with full information.
