Chapter 1 - The Fall Beneath The Mezzanine

Warm late-afternoon light poured through the two-story atrium of the Carter family’s lakefront reception hall in Michigan. The polished pale-stone floor reflected the ivory flowers and champagne décor, while the curved mezzanine swept above the empty main hall.
There were no guests inside yet.
Only family.
And an accusation thirteen years too late.
Emily Carter stood at the center of the mezzanine railing, trembling so badly she could barely breathe.
Tears covered her face.
She looked directly at Laura.
“You know exactly what she did to my mother!”
Laura stood behind Emily and slightly to her right.
Richard—Emily’s father and Laura’s husband—stood only a few paces away, stunned by the fury in his daughter’s voice.
Laura’s expression hardened.
“Stop lying before you tear this family apart!”
Richard turned toward his wife.
“What—”
He didn’t get any farther.
From the side hallway below, Ethan suddenly appeared.
He heard his younger sister crying.
Looked upward.
Saw Laura directly behind her.
And something in the arrangement made him run before he understood why.
“Emily!”
He sprinted into the open center of the atrium and positioned himself beneath the balcony.
Above him, Laura moved.
One hand.
One hard shove against Emily’s upper back.
Nothing accidental about it.
Emily pitched forward over the curved railing.
Richard recoiled in horror.
“Emily!”
Laura froze beside the balcony.
Emily fell through the open atrium.
Her pale-blue dress lifted around her as her body rotated naturally in the air. She struck no railing, no wall, no staircase.
Below, Ethan planted his feet and raised both arms.
Emily came down hard into him.
He caught her around the upper body and waist before she could reach the stone floor.
The impact drove Ethan onto one knee.
But he held her.
Emily gasped and clutched both shoulders of his gray suit.
“I’ve got you,” Ethan said breathlessly. “I’ve got you.”
He checked her face quickly.
No blood.
No visible injury.
Only terror.
Then he felt Emily pull him closer.
Her eyes were no longer looking at him.
They were locked on Laura above.
And when Emily whispered, her voice carried something Ethan had never heard before.
Not panic.
Certainty.
“She knows why Mom’s car never took that turn.”
Ethan’s relief vanished.
Slowly, he looked upward.
Laura remained frozen at the mezzanine railing.
Richard stared at his wife.
And suddenly the family was no longer dealing with what had just happened.
May you like
They were dealing with what had happened thirteen years earlier.
