Chapter 7 - What Laura Told Marianne
The truth about the phone call finally came from Laura herself.
Not immediately.
At first she denied everything.
Then her lawyer received copies of the gate log, call records, and Ethan’s statement about his mother asking whether he was safe.
The story changed.
Laura admitted calling Marianne.
But she said she had done it because she needed to speak privately.
Emily’s attorney asked:
“Why did you make her think Ethan might be in trouble?”
Laura denied doing that.
Then investigators found something in Marianne’s archived insurance file.
A handwritten note recovered from her handbag after the crash.
Only six words mattered:
Ethan okay. Laura lied. Ask Richard.
Richard cried when he saw it.
Laura finally stopped denying the core event.
She had called Marianne and told her Ethan had been involved in an accident near the Carter boathouse.
It was false.
She knew Ethan was not there.
She used him because she knew Marianne would come immediately.
Why?
Because earlier that day, Marianne had confronted Laura about months of interference in the Carter marriage.
Laura had been intercepting messages.
Telling Marianne Richard canceled plans he had never canceled.
Telling Richard Marianne wanted space when she had said no such thing.
Creating small misunderstandings.
Then comforting both sides afterward.
Marianne discovered it after comparing messages directly with Richard’s assistant.
She told Laura she was finished having her inside the family.
She intended to tell Richard everything.
Laura panicked.
She wanted one private conversation before Marianne could reach him.
So she invented an emergency involving Ethan.
Marianne drove to the lake property.
The women argued inside the boathouse lounge.
Laura admitted she loved Richard.
Marianne told her she would never be part of their family again.
Then Marianne left.
Alive.
Angry.
Driving into a storm.
