Chapter 6 - The Call From The Lake House
Phone records from thirteen years earlier were incomplete.
But they were not entirely gone.
The Carter family’s original accident attorney had preserved billing records and call-detail documents because Marianne’s insurer initially questioned whether distracted driving contributed to the crash.
Those archived records still existed.
One entry mattered.
At 9:07 PM, a call lasting forty-three seconds went from the landline inside the old Carter lake house to Marianne’s cell phone.
Marianne called Ethan eight minutes later.
The lake-house phone was rarely used.
That night, according to the access log, only one known person was on the property before Marianne arrived.
Laura.
Richard read the record twice.
Then said:
“No.”
Not because the number was wrong.
Because the implication was too large.
Ethan asked:
“Did you call Mom from the lake house?”
Richard shook his head.
“I was in Chicago.”
Business travel records confirmed it.
Emily had been home with a babysitter.
Ethan was in Grand Rapids.
No staff were scheduled inside the lake residence that night.
Laura was the only person documented there.
Through her attorney, Laura initially denied making the call.
Then investigators recovered an old written statement she gave after Marianne’s death.
In it Laura said:
“I had no contact with Marianne Carter on October 18 and was not present at any Carter family property.”
The new records contradicted both claims.
That did not prove Laura caused the crash.
It proved she had lied about the hours leading up to it.
And once that became clear, the old accident stopped being merely tragic.
