Richard and Laura divorced before the criminal case surrounding Emily’s fall fully concluded.
The separation was ugly but ordinary in its mechanics.
Lawyers.
Property schedules.
Financial disclosures.
No secret inheritance.
No magical ownership reversal.
Richard retained the family lakefront holdings owned through Carter entities predating the marriage.
Laura received what the law and their marital agreements entitled her to.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
The assault case ended with Laura accepting a plea that included custodial consequences, probation conditions after release, and strict no-contact protections involving Emily.
Separate legal review of her statements surrounding Marianne’s death produced additional consequences for false statements and evidence-related conduct where prosecutors believed the surviving records supported them.
She was never charged with Marianne’s death.
Emily initially hated that.
Then she stopped needing the wrong charge to validate the right truth.
The Carter family also corrected Marianne’s story publicly within their own circle.
Richard contacted relatives who had spent years hearing that Marianne was emotionally erratic before she died.
He told them what had actually happened.
She had discovered manipulation.
She had been lured to the lake house by a false emergency.
She confronted Laura.
Then she died in a weather-related crash on the drive away.
Richard did not sanitize his own failures.
He admitted he had ignored Marianne’s warnings about Laura.
He admitted he had married Laura without understanding how much she had manipulated the relationship before Marianne died.
He apologized to Ethan.
Then Emily.
Neither child forgave him instantly.
