Chapter 13 - Laura Finally Admitted What She Wanted
Laura’s formal testimony came months later.
By then denial no longer served her.
She admitted she had wanted Richard before Marianne died.
She denied ever planning Marianne’s death.
On that point, investigators agreed there was no evidence she had.
What she admitted instead was almost more revealing emotionally.
She had convinced herself Richard and Marianne’s marriage was already ending.
Every argument became proof.
Every canceled dinner became proof.
Every time Richard confided that he was exhausted, Laura heard opportunity.
So she began nudging.
A message not delivered.
A dinner time changed.
A comment exaggerated.
A private complaint repeated with slightly harsher wording.
Nothing enormous.
Each act defensible if exposed alone.
Together, they created distance.
Laura told herself she was helping two unhappy people admit the truth.
She was actually manufacturing evidence for the future she wanted.
Then Marianne discovered it.
Laura panicked because exposure would not merely destroy her friendship with the Carters.
It would reveal that the emotional intimacy Richard thought had developed naturally after Marianne’s death had roots in manipulation beforehand.
So she lied.
First about Ethan.
Then about being at the lake.
Then about seeing Marianne.
And after Marianne died, she made the worst decision of all.
She kept lying.
Emily listened to the transcript and finally understood something she had struggled with for months.
Laura’s life had not been built on one giant evil decision.
It had been built on hundreds of small dishonest ones protected by the belief that the next lie would repair the last.
