Chapter 10 - Why Laura Pushed Emily
The shove at the wedding reception became its own criminal case.
Laura’s attorney initially tried to describe it as a reflex during an escalating argument.
The physical setup made that difficult.
Emily had been facing the railing.
Laura was behind her.
Richard stood beside Laura.
Ethan saw the final moment from below.
There was one push.
Direct.
Forceful.
And completely unnecessary.
More importantly, Laura pushed Emily seconds after Emily accused her of knowing something about Marianne’s death.
That timing mattered.
The prosecution did not need to prove the shove was attempted murder to show consciousness of fear.
Laura had spent thirteen years protecting a lie.
Then a surviving daughter confronted her with the one fact that could reopen everything.
Laura reacted physically.
The court treated the conduct seriously.
Emily’s survival did not reduce what happened to harmless drama simply because Ethan happened to be standing beneath the balcony.
Luck does not erase intent.
Laura eventually faced felony assault-related charges tied to the shove.
Richard filed for divorce separately.
There was no magical clause that stripped Laura of everything overnight.
Marital property still had to be sorted.
Her own separate assets remained hers.
The Carter family estate was Richard’s premarital property through a family holding company, so Laura could not simply claim half the venue because she had lived there.
Everything proceeded through ordinary law.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Publicly enough that Laura could no longer control the story.
The irony was not lost on Emily.
For years Laura had survived by making everyone else doubt what they saw.
