Chapter 12 - Marianne’s Last Call Finally Made Sense
The most painful piece of the puzzle remained Ethan’s final call with his mother.
He remembered only fragments.
So investigators retrieved the original phone-company timing and compared it with the lake-house landline record.
Laura called Marianne at 9:07.
Marianne called Ethan at 9:15.
That meant Marianne likely believed the fake emergency for at least eight minutes.
Ethan remembered laughing when his mother asked if he was okay.
He told her he was at the hockey game.
There had been no accident.
No boathouse emergency.
According to traffic-camera timing, Marianne passed Cedar Junction approximately nine minutes later.
She could have turned home then.
She did not.
Emily eventually understood why.
By that point, Marianne knew Ethan was safe.
So she was not going to the lake house to rescue him anymore.
She was going to confront Laura.
Laura had used the lie to get Marianne moving.
Marianne chose to finish the confrontation.
That distinction mattered.
She was not helplessly tricked all the way to her death.
She discovered the lie.
Then decided she wanted answers.
At the boathouse, she got some.
She learned Laura had feelings for Richard.
Learned Laura had manipulated communications between them.
Learned someone she once considered a friend had been deliberately widening the cracks in her marriage.
Then Marianne left, intending to call Richard.
She never made it.
Richard eventually listened to Ethan describe that final call and broke down.
Not because he thought Ethan could have changed anything.
Because Marianne spent some of the final minutes of her life trying to figure out which people around her were telling the truth.
That knowledge became the thing Richard found hardest to forgive.
Not the affair Laura hoped to have someday.
