Chapter 14 - LAURA’S LETTER

Two years after sentencing, Laura wrote to Mom.

Not me.

Mom asked whether I wanted to read it.

“No.”

“Good.”

She read it privately.

Then burned it in the fireplace.

I did not ask what it said.

That was growth for me.

Old Daniel would have needed to know.

Needed context.

Needed to protect.

Mom’s letter belonged to Mom.

Later she said only:

“She apologized.”

“How do you feel?”

“Older.”

I laughed.

She smiled.

Then became serious.

“I don’t forgive her yet.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I might someday.”

“You still don’t have to.”

She nodded.

May you like

That was enough.

Forgiveness was not a family assignment.
