Chapter 15 - THE HOUSE

Mom renovated the porch.

Not because she wanted to erase the storm.

Because the wood needed work.

She replaced the outdoor table.

Installed better lighting.

Kept the brass key.

The digital lock disappeared.

People thought that was symbolic.

Mostly, she just hated the app.

I helped repaint the trim.

One afternoon, rain started.

Heavy.

Summer storm.

Mom came outside carrying two mugs.

“Inside?” I asked.

“No.”

We sat under the covered porch.

Rain hammered the yard.

She watched it.

No fear.

No performance.

Just weather.

That may have been the moment I understood recovery.
