Chapter 19 - THE LAST KEY

When Mom turned seventy-eight, she decided to move.

Not because anyone forced her.

Because stairs annoyed her.

She sold the house.

Full market value.

Independent realtor.

Independent lawyer.

Independent financial adviser.

Every decision documented.

Every choice hers.

The buyer was a young family.

At closing, Mom placed the old brass key on the table.

The new owner smiled.

“Does it still work?”

“Yes.”

Mom pushed it toward her.

“It’s yours now.”

I nearly cried.

Mom noticed.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“It’s a key.”

I laughed.

She did too.

Outside the title office, she handed me a smaller key.

“To what?”

“My new condo.”

I looked at her.

“Emergency only?”

“Yes.”

“Understood.”

That was trust.

Not permanent access.

Defined access.

May you like

Chosen access.

The difference mattered.
