Chapter 7 - THE ORIGINAL DEED

The original deed still had Dad’s embossed seal.

Mom cried when she saw it.

Not because paper is sentimental.

Because it proved someone had physically gone into her home safe and taken something Dad had protected.

Evan claimed Laura gave it to him.

Laura claimed Evan stole it.

Michael Grant produced an email.

Laura to Evan:

I have the original. Once transfer clears, destroy it.

That ended that argument.

Prosecutors charged Laura with fraud, forgery, identity theft, elder exploitation, obstruction, and conspiracy.

Evan faced related charges plus embezzlement.

Laura pleaded not guilty.

Evan sought a deal.

He talked.

A lot.

He admitted Laura built the guardianship strategy.

He admitted she redirected Mom’s communications.

He admitted they paid Dr. Mallory.

He admitted Northbridge management did not know the full scheme.

Most importantly, he admitted the plan depended on me being away.

Laura tracked my travel calendar.

Scheduled the lock change.

Scheduled the fake deed filing.

Scheduled the guardianship hearing.

Scheduled Mom’s proposed facility admission.

All within one week.

Compressed pressure.

No time to think.

No time to get advice.

A classic coercive tactic.

I read the timeline and felt sick.

If my flight had been delayed one more day, Mom might have been in court without independent counsel.

If guardianship passed, Laura could have authorized facility placement.

If Mom entered Willow Ridge, communication restrictions could begin.

If the deed recorded, Northbridge negotiations could accelerate.

Everything was timed.

The rainstorm had been incidental.

Laura did not create the weather.

She used it.

That somehow made the cruelty worse.

She saw the storm and still put Mom outside.

Not because rain served the scheme.

Because she wanted punishment.

That revealed character beyond fraud.

We learned Laura grew up with financial insecurity.

Her father lost their home.

Evan became obsessed with wealth.

Laura became obsessed with never being powerless again.

She married me partly because I seemed stable.

Then Mom’s house became an asset she could convert.

Again, background explained appetite.

Not behavior.

Mom said:

“I was poor once too.”

May you like

Then shrugged.

“I didn’t steal anyone’s house.”
