Chapter 17 - EVAN’S RETURN

Evan finished his sentence before Laura.

He requested a meeting with Mom through restorative justice.

She agreed.

I did not attend.

Again, her decision.

Afterward, she told me he cried.

Returned part of the money he had hidden.

Apologized.

“Do you forgive him?”

She shrugged.

“I believe he’s sorry.”

That was not the same thing.

Important distinction.

Evan later worked in warehouse operations.

No finance.

No property deals.

Maybe he changed.

Maybe prison scared him.

Maybe both.

Not our responsibility to measure.

Mom’s house remained standing on the corner.

Northbridge built around it.

Literally.

New development on three sides.

Her little brick house stayed.

A stubborn rectangle of memory and choice.

May you like

Developers called it inefficient.

Mom called it home.
