Chapter 6 - THE NURSING HOME PLAN

The care facility was called Willow Ridge.
Expensive.
Private.
Two hours away.
Laura had placed Mom on a waiting list without telling us.
She submitted medical records claiming worsening memory loss.
Dr. Mallory signed the assessment.
Again, without meeting Mom.
The facility expected admission after guardianship approval.
Once admitted, Mom’s absence from the house would make the property sale easier.
Clean.
Administrative.
Respectable.
That was the genius of the scheme.
No kidnapping.
No obvious force.
Paperwork could do the violence.
Dana subpoenaed communications.
Laura to Willow Ridge:
Evelyn may resist initially. Family will support transition.
Family.
Meaning herself.
I had never agreed.
Another email:
Please restrict outside calls during adjustment period.
My stomach turned.
Isolation built into “care.”
Mom read the email.
Her hands shook.
Then steadied.
“I want to testify.”
Dana said:
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
That mattered.
At the next hearing, Mom took the stand.
Laura’s attorney asked:
“Mrs. Carter, do you sometimes forget appointments?”
“Yes.”
“Do you sometimes misplace items?”
“Yes.”
“Do you rely on family for transportation?”
“Yes.”
The lawyer smiled slightly.
Then Mom said:
“I also know my address, my bank accounts, my medications, my attorney, my property value, and the fact that your client tried to sell my house without asking.”
The smile disappeared.
The independent geriatric evaluator testified next.
Mild normal age-related memory variation.
No evidence of incapacity.
No basis for guardianship.
Petition denied.
The judge referred possible fraud to prosecutors.
Laura’s legal strategy collapsed.
Then she escalated personally.
She called my employer.
Claimed I was under criminal investigation for elder abuse.
False.
My company placed me on temporary leave pending review.
I was furious.
Dana said:
“This is retaliation.”
“Can we stop it?”
“Not instantly.”
That was the frustrating part of law.
Even lies create process.
I provided documents.
Court records.
Video.
My employer reinstated me.
But the damage to my reputation lingered.
Laura understood pressure points.
If she could not control Mom, she would destabilize me.
Then Evan disappeared.
Northbridge said he had taken leave.
His apartment was empty.
Phone off.
Investigators traced him to Florida.
He had transferred $600,000 from a project account.
Suddenly the property scheme looked bigger.
Evan had been using Northbridge money improperly.
He needed the Carter property deal to close so he could cover the hole with commissions and side payments.
Laura had not only wanted profit.
She was protecting her brother from exposure.
That complicated motive.
Not excuse.
Then federal agents arrested Evan at an airport.

He was trying to leave the country.
And inside his luggage they found the original deed to Mom’s house.
