Chapter 1 - The Dinner Where Nobody Protected Emma

Emma Cole was already crying when Vanessa lifted the wine glass.

Seven years old.

Cream dress.

One eye visibly bruised.

Standing alone beside the Hale family dining table while a room full of adults watched.

Vanessa Hale looked down at her without a trace of sympathy.

Then she tipped the entire glass.

SPLASH.

Red wine poured straight over Emma’s head.

It soaked through her hair.

Ran down her face.

Streaked the front of her cream dress.

Emma gasped.

Then began sobbing harder.

Vanessa lowered the empty glass.

“LOOK AT WHAT YOU MADE ME DO.”

Nobody moved.

Eleanor Hale sat rigidly nearby in pearls and a dark formal dress.

Richard Hale remained at the head of the polished mahogany table.

Silent guests stared at their plates.

Then the tall double doors burst open.

Damian Cole rushed inside.

He looked like a man who had already been through a fight before reaching the dining room.

White tank top.

Dark trousers.

Red headband.

Bruising across his face.

He saw Emma.

And stopped.

His daughter was drenched in wine.

Her eye was bruised.

She was crying in front of a room full of adults.

“Emma!”

Damian crossed the room in seconds.

He bent and scooped her tightly into his arms.

Emma wrapped both arms around his neck.

“Daddy…”

That one word almost broke him.

Damian held her securely against his chest.

Then turned toward Vanessa.

One hand continued supporting Emma.

The other came across Vanessa’s face.

SLAP.

One hard open palm.

Vanessa staggered sideways.

The empty wine glass slipped from her fingers.

CRASH.

It shattered on the floor.

There was no second slap.

Damian immediately turned his back on her.

He started toward the doors with Emma still clinging to him.

Then Richard rose.

He grabbed a drinking glass from the table.

And hurled it.

CRASH.

The glass struck Damian across the back and shattered.

Emma remained completely protected against his chest.

Damian barely reacted.

He stopped.

Slowly turned.

Richard was still standing.

Furious.

Damian walked directly toward him.

Emma remained securely supported on one arm.

Then Damian drove one powerful front kick into Richard’s torso.

THUD.

Richard flew backward into the rolling food-service cart.

CRASH.

The cart tipped sideways.

Dishes rattled and scattered.

Richard collapsed beside it, conscious but stunned.

Damian stopped.

No second kick.

He stood over Richard with his daughter still in his arms.

Emma buried her face against his shoulder.

Around them, the room had gone completely silent.

Eleanor stared.

Vanessa held her reddening cheek.

The dinner guests looked terrified.

Damian slowly looked from one adult to another.

Then down at his daughter’s bruised eye.

His voice dropped to ice.

“ONE BY ONE—NONE OF YOU ARE GETTING AWAY.”

No one answered.

But something happened that Damian would remember later.

Not one person asked what he meant.

Not one guest looked confused.

They looked afraid.

May you like

As if every adult in that dining room already knew exactly what had happened to Emma before Damian arrived.
