Chapter 6 - Richard Believed Vanessa Had the Right to “Break the Attachment”
Richard’s explanation was colder.
He believed Emma was too attached to Damian.
That was his phrase.
Too attached.
He told Damian through an attorney:
“Vanessa was attempting to establish authority in her own household.”
Damian read the statement twice.
His own household?
The abuse occurred in Richard’s mansion.
But the principle was the same.
Richard believed Vanessa could not become Damian’s “real wife” while Emma remained emotionally centered on her father and the memory of Rachel.
He thought Emma needed to be pushed toward independence.
At seven.
Three days after her father was hospitalized.
When Emma cried for Damian, Richard told Vanessa:
“If you give in every time, she’ll run the marriage.”
That sentence became the philosophy of the entire weekend.
A frightened child asking for her injured father was reframed as manipulation.
Once adults accepted that premise, cruelty became easy to rename.
Discipline.
Boundaries.
Authority.
Family order.
