Chapter 5 - Eleanor Had Tried to Help Once—and Then Stopped

Eleanor was the first adult Damian confronted afterward.
She called him the morning after the dinner.
Her voice sounded broken.
“I’m sorry.”
Damian almost hung up.
Instead he asked:
“For what?”
A long silence.
Then:
“For being afraid of my own daughter.”
That answer surprised him.
Eleanor explained that she challenged Vanessa after Emma fell.
She told her:
“This child needs her father.”
Vanessa became furious.
She accused Eleanor of undermining her marriage.
Richard took Vanessa’s side.
He told his wife:
“Damian trusted Vanessa with the girl. Stay out of it.”
Eleanor did.
That decision grew larger by the hour.
She heard Emma crying behind a guest-room door.
She saw Vanessa confiscate the phone.
She watched Emma being seated away from the dinner table.
She saw the bruise.
And she told herself:
Vanessa is the stepmother.
Damian will be home soon.
Richard says not to interfere.
It was cowardice disguised as respecting parental authority.
Eleanor knew it now.
Damian told her:
“You watched a seven-year-old ask for help.”
Eleanor began crying.
“I know.”

He did not comfort her.
