Chapter 2 - Vanessa Was Supposed to Be Emma’s Stepmother, Not Her Punisher

Vanessa had married Damian eighteen months earlier.
Emma was not her biological daughter.
She was Damian’s child from his first marriage.
Emma’s mother, Rachel, had died from complications after a sudden illness when Emma was four.
For two years afterward, Damian raised his daughter mostly alone.
Then Vanessa entered their lives.
At first, Emma adored her.
Vanessa painted her nails.
Helped with school projects.
Bought matching Christmas pajamas.
She told everyone:
“I never want Emma to feel like she’s getting a replacement mother. I just want to be another person who loves her.”
Damian believed her.
So did Emma.
The Hales welcomed Emma too.
Richard insisted she call him Grandpa Richard.
Eleanor bought her books.
Family photographs began including her.
For more than a year, nothing seemed seriously wrong.
Then Damian got hurt.
Three days before the dinner, a delivery truck ran a red light and clipped his SUV.
The accident was not catastrophic.
But Damian suffered a concussion, facial bruising, and a shoulder injury.
Doctors kept him overnight for observation.
Vanessa told him:
“Don’t worry about Emma. Mom and Dad are hosting dinner this weekend anyway. I’ll take her there.”
Damian agreed.
That decision haunted him afterward.

Because seventy-two hours later, he walked into the Hale dining room and found his daughter looking as though she had been living with strangers.
