Chapter 13 - Damian Ended the Marriage Without Making Emma Choose

Vanessa wanted another chance.
Of course she did.
Her first apology said:
“I was overwhelmed.”
Her second blamed Richard.
“He encouraged me.”
Her third finally approached the truth:
“I resented how much of Damian’s emotional life belonged to Emma.”
But understanding came too late for marriage.
Damian filed for divorce.
He did not ask Emma:
“Do you want Vanessa gone?”
That would have been another adult burden placed on a child.
He made the decision himself.
Then told her:
“Vanessa won’t be living with us anymore.”
Emma stared at him.
“Because I told?”
“No.”
“Because I was bad?”
“No.”
“Because you’re mad?”
Damian knelt.
“Because adults are responsible for making home safe. That’s my job.”
Emma processed that.
Then whispered:
“Okay.”
No celebration.

Just relief.
