Chapter 3 - Emma’s Bruised Eye Happened the First Night

Damian did not ask Emma for a full explanation while they were still in the mansion.
He carried her out.
Put her in his car.
Wrapped his jacket around her wet dress.
Then drove straight to a pediatric urgent-care clinic.
Only once a nurse had cleaned the wine from Emma’s hair and examined her eye did Damian begin asking gentle questions.
“How did this happen?”
Emma touched the bruise.
Her hand trembled.
“I fell.”
Damian watched her face.
“Okay.”
He did not accuse her of lying.
He simply waited.
The clinician asked:
“Where did you fall?”
Emma looked toward Damian.
Then whispered:
“Grandpa’s hallway.”
Richard.
“What happened before you fell?”
Emma began crying again.
“Vanessa was mad.”
Damian’s stomach tightened.
“What was she mad about?”
“I called you.”
Damian went still.
“You called me?”
Emma nodded.
“When?”
“The first night.”
Damian checked his phone.
No call.
No voicemail.
Then he remembered something.
Vanessa had taken his phone for nearly six hours while he slept after receiving medication at the hospital.
She claimed she was “protecting his rest.”
Emma continued.
“I used Grandma Eleanor’s phone.”
“What happened?”
“Vanessa took it.”
“And then?”
Emma looked down.
“She grabbed me. I pulled away. I ran.”
“Did she hit you?”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
That distinction mattered.
Vanessa had not punched her.
Emma had tried to run down the hallway, stumbled, and struck the side of her face against a padded bench.
The bruise was accidental.
But the fear that caused the fall was not.
And Vanessa had still done something worse afterward.
She told Emma:
“If you tell Damian you fell because of me, I’ll make sure he stays in the hospital longer.”
May you like
A seven-year-old believed her.
