Chapter 8 - Damian Learned Why Vanessa Said “Look What You Made Me Do”
The phrase haunted him.
Look at what you made me do.
It was not the first time Vanessa used it.
Emma remembered hearing it earlier that weekend.
When she cried after being denied a phone call:
“Look what you made me do. Now you’ve lost dessert.”
When she refused to remove a photograph of Rachel from her overnight bag:
“Look what you made me do.”
Vanessa tore the photo halfway across before Eleanor stopped her.
When Emma tried to leave the guest room:
“Look what you made me do.”
Door locked.
The pattern mattered.
Vanessa never described herself as making choices.
Emma caused them.
Emma made her angry.
Emma made her punish.
Emma made her isolate.
It was the logic of coercion reduced to language a child could absorb.
Eventually Emma started apologizing before Vanessa even did anything.
That frightened Damian more than the bruise.
His daughter was learning to predict an adult’s anger and assume responsibility for it.
