Chapter 2 - The Soft Touch

Brinley completely ignored her mother's panic.
She sat comfortably on Jude’s lap, swinging her tiny legs in her pink dress. She didn't look at the heavy black handgun. She didn't sense the terrifying, lethal aura that made fully grown men tremble in Jude's presence.
Instead, the innocent three-year-old gently reached her small, delicate hand up toward his face.
Before Jude could even flinch or pull away, Brinley softly touched the violent, jagged scar crossing his left cheek.
"Mommy," Brinley whispered, her voice incredibly soft and purely innocent. "He's sad."
Elena held her breath. A tight, cinematic close-up captured her wide, terrified eyes. She fully expected the ruthless mafia boss to violently shove the child away, or worse, reach for the weapon on the desk.
But Jude didn't move.
The fearsome man, whose name made the entire city hold its breath, went completely, terrifyingly rigid. He stared down at the little blonde girl with the teddy bear. The cold, hardened, demonic demeanor he wore like armor was instantly, entirely disarmed by her gentle touch.
Brinley smiled warmly at Jude, looking right past the terrifying exterior that everyone else feared.
