Chapter 4 - The Underground Doctor

Marcus didn't have time to process the sheer magnitude of the betrayal. Vincent’s pulse was fading by the second.

He tapped his secure earpiece, dialing directly to the syndicate’s elite underground trauma team.

"I need the trauma surgeons in the south wing immediately. Bring the blood bags. We have a code red," Marcus commanded, his voice a low, lethal whisper so the rest of the mansion wouldn't hear. "And lock down the entire perimeter. Nobody leaves. Nobody."

Marcus scooped little Adeline up with his free arm, completely ignoring the blood transferring onto his crisp white shirt.

"You did so good, sweetie," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with profound emotion as he handed the toddler to his most trusted, heavily armed lieutenant at the door. "Take her to the safe room. Do not let her out of your sight."

Within two minutes, a team of underground doctors rushed into the office, transforming the heavy mahogany desk into an emergency operating table. They worked with frantic, blinding speed, stabilizing Vincent’s heart rate and packing the gunshot wound.

"He lost a lot of blood, Marcus," the lead surgeon whispered grimly. "He's alive, but he shouldn't be."

Marcus looked down at his unconscious boss. The king was barely clinging to life.
