Chapter 2 - The Abandoned Ring

Marcus spun around, his chest heaving, his dark eyes darting wildly across the blood-soaked room.

He stumbled away from the bathtub and moved toward the massive marble vanity. Resting perfectly in the center of the spotless counter, entirely untouched by the chaos of the room, was a small black velvet box. The lid was wide open. Inside sat Natalie’s massive, five-carat flawless diamond wedding ring. The symbol of his ownership and his wealth, completely abandoned.

Right next to the velvet box sat Natalie’s black smartphone. The screen was glowing faintly. Marcus grabbed the phone with shaking, bloody hands, desperate to find a clue, a text, or a location.

The screen read: FACTORY RESET COMPLETE.

She had wiped it entirely clean. There was absolutely no digital trace of her left.

Marcus’s hands began to tremble violently. He slowly lowered the wiped phone. Tucked neatly underneath it was a small, glossy piece of black-and-white paper.

Marcus picked it up. It was a 12-week ultrasound photograph.

An extreme, cinematic close-up captured Marcus’s face as his arrogant billionaire demeanor completely shattered. He stared at the tiny, perfect silhouette on the glossy paper. The baby he had always demanded, the heir to his massive empire, was printed right there in black and white.

"What have I done..." Marcus whispered, his voice broken, tears of pure, unadulterated devastation spilling down his face.

The blood in the bathtub suddenly made horrific, agonizing sense. Natalie hadn't harmed herself. She had suffered a massive, catastrophic miscarriage alone in the penthouse while her husband ignored her desperate pleas for help.
