Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Checkmate

Marcus looked up, his red eyes filled with confusion. "Why not?"
The Security Chief pulled a thick manila envelope from his suit jacket. "My men just found this sitting on the kitchen counter, addressed to the District Attorney."
The Chief dumped the contents onto the mahogany desk.
Dozens of printed emails, bank statements, and encrypted chat logs spilled across the wood. It was an exhaustive, meticulously documented trail of Marcus’s illegal offshore tax evasion, insider trading, and corporate bribery over the last five years.
Natalie hadn't just stolen his money. She had compiled enough federal evidence to send him to a maximum-security prison for the rest of his life.
If Marcus called the police to report the missing forty million, Natalie would simply mail her copies of the evidence to the FBI. It was a perfect, absolute checkmate.
Marcus stared at the documents, the crushing, inescapable reality settling into his bones. He couldn't search for her. He couldn't send his men after her. He had to sit in this bloody penthouse and let her go, or he would lose his freedom entirely.
Suddenly, the heavy front doors of the penthouse swung open.
"Marcus, babe! Why are your guards looking at me like that?!"
A shrill, arrogant voice echoed down the hallway. It was Chloe, his twenty-five-year-old mistress, marching into the office holding designer shopping bags.
