Chapter 4 - The Empty Vault

Marcus shoved past his Security Chief, leaving bloody footprints on the hardwood floors as he sprinted down the long, luxurious hallway toward his private home office.
"Call the banks!" Marcus shouted over his shoulder. "Freeze all of our joint accounts! Cancel every single credit card attached to her name!"
Marcus burst into his office. He rushed behind his massive mahogany desk and placed his thumb on the biometric scanner hidden beneath the wood. A heavy mechanical click echoed in the room as the hidden wall safe behind a large oil painting slid open.
Marcus reached inside to grab his emergency stash—two million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds and a stack of blank passports.
His hand grasped absolutely nothing.
Marcus froze. He slowly looked inside the steel vault. It was completely empty.
The two million dollars in bonds were gone. The passports were gone. In their place sat a single, neatly folded piece of expensive hotel stationery.
Marcus pulled the paper out with trembling, bloody fingers. It was a receipt from the ultra-luxury hotel where he had been staying with his mistress for the last three days. Written across the bottom in Natalie’s elegant, steady handwriting was a single sentence:
“I bought my freedom with your secrets.”
